Agripina Odongo, headteacher of Lung’anyiro Primary School in Kenya’s Kakamega County, was ecstatic when she heard about the International Day of Play. For her, the UN Assembly’s declaration to set aside 11 June to recognise play as a right for every child is both timely and crucial.

She emphasises that play brings immeasurable value to early childhood education, describing it as a vital component in children’s learning and development. “Play is not just about fun; it is a powerful tool for holistic development. From playing, children build a foundation for literacy, active learning, social and emotional growth, problem-solving, creativity, physical development, cognitive skills, language development, imagination, stress reduction, and exploration of roles and identities,” she states.

Despite these benefits, global research involving over 10,000 children and young people reveals that only 27% play outside their homes. In the same breath, 79% of children report that playing makes them happy, with the same percentage wishing they could play more with their parents or caregivers. 96% of the survey participants mentioned at least one positive emotion related to play. Setting a day aside to celebrate the right to play and accelerate global action to protect, promote and prioritise opportunities to play is therefore reason for Agripina and other school leaders to celebrate.

Agripina’s passion for Education and Leadership led her to become a school leader, aiming to create a positive environment for pupils and staff and to guide the school towards strategic goals. Since starting her journey in Early Childhood Education (ECE) in 1996, she has witnessed the critical contribution that play makes to learners. “As educators and parents, we should recognise and encourage play as an integral part of children’s learning journey. My students enjoy learning through play hence their eagerness to explore the world and their role in it. I can clearly see how it has improved their critical thinking,” she notes.

Play-based Learning

Play-based learning entails integration of playful learning methodologies such as games, role-play, interactive exercises, and hands-on tasks to make learning more engaging for early childhood learners. To incorporate play-based learning, Agripina has established Play-Based Learning Centres like a science corner and block centre, allowing children to explore concepts through hands-on experiences. She employs manipulatives like puzzles and counting grids to encourage mathematical thinking, uses puppets and role-play to develop language and social skills, integrates subject-specific games to foster collaboration and problem-solving, and promotes outdoor play to enhance creativity and application of classroom knowledge in a relaxed setting.

In celebration of the International Day of Play, Agripina advocates for educational workshops to sensitise parents and educators about the importance of play in learning and child development. She also supports playful parenting, sharing resources and ideas on integrating play into daily parenting practices, partnering with local schools for special play-based learning sessions or outdoor activities, and setting up themed play stations to encourage children to explore and enjoy.

Why Play?

Her sentiments are echoed by Moses Muthini, headteacher of Kikaatini Primary and Junior School in Machakos County, who believes that the International Day of Play underscores the importance of play in holistic child development. “This day brings global attention to the value of play for people of all ages. It highlights play as a fundamental human right and essential for healthy development and learning. Emphasising play can help address issues related to mental health, stress, and sedentary lifestyles by encouraging activities that improve physical health and emotional resilience. The declaration also supports the integration of play-based learning methodologies in educational systems, promoting more engaging and effective learning environments,” he says.

With 26 years of experience in Early Childhood Education, Moses has incorporated play inside and outside the classroom to enhance learning experiences. He believes that play-based education makes learning enjoyable and meaningful, instilling a love for learning that lasts a lifetime. “It prepares children not only for academic success but also for social, emotional, and physical well-being, laying a strong foundation for their future,” he states.

For indoor play, Moses has set up subject-specific stations like a reading nook, math games corner, and science exploration table. He has also created spaces for role-playing and simulations, including a mini market, post office, and doctor’s office, to develop social and language skills. He uses board games, card games, and digital games aligned with the curriculum to reinforce concepts, employs puppets and storytelling for interactive language arts, and provides materials for art, music, and crafts to encourage creative expression. Additionally, he integrates educational apps and interactive whiteboards for dynamic lessons and incorporates movement-based activities such as dance, to teach various subjects.

Outside the classroom, Moses has created areas for science experiments, nature observations, and creative building projects. He engages children in gardening projects and nature walks to learn about plants, animals, and ecosystems. “Physical play is also crucial—we use playground equipment, sports activities, and obstacle courses to promote fitness and teach teamwork and strategy. Nature-based activities like scavenger hunts, outdoor storytelling, field trips, and outdoor classrooms enhance learning experiences by linking them to natural elements and spaces,” he adds.

How to Mark the Day

To commemorate the International Day of Play, Moses spent the day playing games with his pupils and extended the same with his children back home. He suggests hosting community play events and musical performances in public spaces, dedicating school days to play-based learning activities, and planning special events like treasure hunts and outdoor games as practical ways to mark the day. He also proposes workplace initiatives where companies organise team-building activities, game days, or wellness programmes that include physical activities and fun challenges. According to him, families can spend the day engaging in playful activities like board games, outdoor sports, DIY projects, or park outings. Hosting workshops on the science of play, its benefits, and incorporating play into daily life can further promote the cause. Supporting organisations that advocate for play and play-based learning through fundraising, volunteer opportunities, and partnerships is also crucial. “Ensuring play events and activities are inclusive and accessible to everyone, adapting games and spaces for all abilities, is essential for a successful celebration,” he reiterates.
