“Why don’t you want to file a legal complaint?”The journey to justice for a survivor of sexual and gender-based violence, particularly through traditional legal pathways, is marked by several challenges, including:👉🏽 Social stigma and a lack of trust;👉🏽 Long-drawn, complex, mostly unfamiliar proceedings that often take away the agency of individuals;👉🏽 Repeatedly needing to recount traumatic events in detail, with proceedings depending on survivors’ ability to describe events that they may not want to or be able to remember fully;👉🏽 Lack of psycho-social support from a system that exacerbates trauma in the pursuit of justice.
