Reflecting on my career journey .Starting a new business wasn't my plan initially, mainly when everyone discussed finding another job. So, I transitioned from PwC to Baker McKenzie, thinking it would be my long-term career until retirement. .However, in 2008, the global financial crisis hit, causing a shortage of jobs. My partner asked if I'd take a 40% pay cut while still working 100%. It didn't make sense to me..Once bitten, twice shy. I realized this was the perfect time to embark on something new. Sometimes, unexpected challenges lead us to the most rewarding opportunities. . _______________________.😉 I am Jack✅ Providing consultancy in optimizing your tax position in your business legally & and ethically so that you sleep better every night. ✅ Supporting you by leveraging live in-person events and virtual summits for more sales & and brand influence.Like this post? I was back in the UK over Christmas and for nostalgia’s sake I passed by Embankment Place where I started my career many moons ago at PwC. It feels like yesterday that i walked through those doors in my uncomfortable skirt suit (heaven forbid I would have the temerity to wear trousers…..) and I couldn’t help reflecting on what advice I would have given that newbie auditor all those years ago.🎱 Your career will not be linear, it will take many twists and turns. That’s ok - enjoy it.🤝 Your network is key. I’m still connected to people I worked with all those years ago at PwC and all the jobs since. Whether in the UK or Australia they have become my treasured brains trust and we’ve connected each other to so many opportunities personal and professional over the years.🌎 Your reputation is everything - the world is small. I’ve lost count of the people who have popped back into my work life from decades ago and also lost count of people who have informally cross referenced someone with me once they’ve seen we’re connected. Never burn a bridge.💡 It’s your EQ not your skills and experience that differentiate you at a senior level. Your technical skills are table stakes, your “soft” skills are what elevate you. NB. I am constantly in search for a more appropriate descriptor than “soft” given how critical these skills are - let me know if you have one! 🚫 Sunday scaries are a sign that something needs to change. Wrong company, wrong job or wrong relationship with your work. I don’t believe the saying “Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life” - some of the hardest work you’ll do will be in pursuit of the work you love and there will inevitably be times that it’s a grind. BUT consistently dreading work is not ok. You deserve more than that.✨ And lastly - you should have worn the trousers. What do you wish you’d known when you started your career?#linkedinnewsaustralia #careeradvice

"Everyone’s definition of ‘success’ is completely different. One of my biggest challenges was figuring out what ‘success’ looks like for me. What might sound easy in theory, I found very challenging in reality. It took me a while to be comfortable and accept that my definition of ‘success’ may look very different to that of my friends."Ten years into a dynamic career at PwC, Maria Kinsella reflects on redefining success, embracing change, and finding inspiration in mentors and family.Read the full article on the Accountancy Ireland website: https://brnw.ch/21wHNbo#CharteredAccountants #Careers #Assurance #Success #Change

I feel really grateful to have been asked to represent RSM UK on Bright Network's panel today to discuss “Breaking Barriers” in relation to social mobility (thanks Sandra Myers-Edwards for the nomination!).We discussed how a lack of relevant work experience can be perceived by students to be a barrier to applying for graduate positions and debunked this – I personally shared my thoughts on breaking down what skills a job may require and then thinking of examples from either part-time work, sports teams, clubs/hobbies or even group coursework assignments to evidence that you have those skills. For example, thinking though examples you can share around communication skills, teamworking skills and problem solving skills to name a few.We discussed focussing on your diversity as a strength rather than a weakness and embracing what makes you unique. I shared an example of feeling a need to conform when I first moved to University and even starting Golf lessons thinking that it would help me to "fit in" better - I soon realised that the effort to conform was tiring and that it was much better to lean in to things that I genuinely enjoyed doing. We ended the session with some top tips from the panel which I thought would be useful to share:⭐ Be authentic and not afraid to be yourself because this is what makes you unique and valuable in a team environment⭐ You will have to work on your network but make networking practical and break it down into tangible tasks⭐ Reflect on your strengths as an individual and really get to know yourself before applying for rolesAt RSM, we have a number of open vacancies for both school leaver and graduate positions which I would encourage students to look at if they want to join an organisation that encourages being able to bring your whole self to work - Link to our open vacancies page: https://lnkd.in/gn-jAZD2

I always thought - and said - that my role with Grant Thornton LLP (US) would be my last full-time job, and it was. Although it ended before I expected (hey, life happens) I have made a successful transition to being an independent consultant. This would not have been possible without many people, but most particularly those with whom I have worked in the past who reached out to offer ideas, advice, referrals - and engagements.Today I am working with several clients, in a variety of sectors. But they all have a few things in common;1) a genuine commitment to managing their business well over the long as well as short term2) understanding that being the preferred provider, employer, customer, investment and community partner defines the pathway to success3) a sense of the 'value' that they bring with their products and services, and also the manner in which they produce them
